ABOUT US

BE-IMAGINATIVE is an Emmy award-winning collective of extraordinary artists, healers, and community leaders dedicated to healing the profound grief in our Black, Indigenous, and Brown communities through multidimensional storytelling. With community healing retreats, artistic interpretation, and celebratory events, we focus on narratives of disruptive hope, healing, agency, and love, rooted in ancestral honoring. Our belief in the transformative power of art and culture guides us to provide a safe space for individuals and families to explore their grief, find purpose, and embark on a journey of healing and recovery. Through art therapy, cultural workshops, and partnerships, we foster connection, celebrate diversity, and empower our community. BE-IMAGINATIVE is a catalyst for change, reimagining destinies through the power of imagination.

POSITIONING STATEMENT

By harnessing the creative force of the collective imagination, we provide a safe and nurturing space for individuals and families to explore their pain, find purpose, and embark on a journey of healing and growth. Through our innovative approach, we celebrate diversity, amplify voices of hope, and rewrite the narratives of our people, igniting a powerful movement of resilience, transformation, and limitless possibilities.

PILLARS OF OUR ORGANIZATION

Nkyinkyim: Twisting, Versatility, and Surviving symbolizes the twists and turns of life’s journey. Life can be challenging sometimes, but it is up to us to take the twists and turns and be imaginative about the outcomes that we want for ourselves and each other.

Sankofa: It is not taboo to go back and retrieve what may be at risk of being forgotten. We remember where we’ve been and use that as fuel to transform our pain into our passion. We are guided by the love and light of our ancestors.

Ananse Ntontan: The Spider’s Web symbolizes wisdom, creativity, and the complexities of life. We use our wisdom and creativity to tell stories of hope, healing, and resilience.

Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu: Siamese crocodiles that symbolize democracy in unity. The crocodiles share one stomach, so neither of them survives without the other.

Self-care: “Self-care is not self-indulgence; it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” - Audre Lorde

Being a part of this collective feels more like being part of a family. Love is really at the foundation and you can tell. I’ve painted portraits many times before but this time was different. By working with BE I’ve had the opportunity to directly use my art as healing for others. I’ve never felt so connected to the process of painting the essence of a beautiful soul, who unfortunately, got the gift of life taken from him through gun violence. It was such an emotional yet amazing experience to bring his essence to life and it [has] blessed me to be able to gift this image to his mother and family.

Being a part [of BE] has been a life changing experience for me. I feel valued, loved and appreciated. There is a strong community of individuals working together to better everyone we come in contact with.
